The Euphrasian Basilica

Bishop Euphrasianius, upon arriving in Poreč, was dissatisfied with both the modest church and the lethargy of the small provincial town. Inspired by Byzantine art, he decided to build a basilica that would immortalize him.

The Euphrasian Basilica, one of the best preserved early Christian units and a significant historical monument, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. Bishop Euphrasianius, upon arriving in Poreč, was dissatisfied with the existing church and the lethargy of the town. Inspired by Byzantine art, he decided to build a basilica that would leave a lasting legacy.

In 1997, the Euphrasian Basilica, one of the best preserved early Christian units, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The basilica itself reflects the personality of Bishop Euphrasian, with his initials and figure prominently displayed in various places, including the mosaic. This was done to assert his defiance towards the pope, who had declared him an apostate. His bold act resulted in the creation of a remarkable structure that forever impacted the small town.

The highlight of the Euphrasian Basilica is its magnificent mosaics, particularly those adorning the apse head. These works of art, made centuries ago from multi-colored pebbles, still retain their brilliance and freshness. The Madonna and Christ can be seen in the center of the mosaic, surrounded by archangels and other saints.

If you examine the Euphrasian Basilica closely, you will discover numerous traces of the bishop who built it.

The interior of the basilica also features depictions of saints and Christ as lambs, as well as the Christ Pantocrator with the twelve apostles above the triumphal arch. The ciborium, under which the altar is located, is adorned with a canopy that resembles a starry sky made of blue and gold pebbles. Take a moment to embrace the serenity of the vast basilica and engage in prayer.

The Euphrasian Basilica is open for visits daily, except on Sundays and church holidays. Visitors can also climb the bell tower for a breathtaking view of Poreč and its surroundings.
